Trevor Hampton will change figures to fit the situation. There have been 4 Code officers for several years and they always had time to patrol the streets before. They also used to tow abandoned vehicles several times a year. The officers used to stay in areas, now they often ride together and do far fewer violations than they used to. Trevor Hampton however will change the figures to probably show otherwise. He uses the number of cases brought to the magistrate as a guage of how they are doing, when in fact that shows bad communication and a failure to get voluntary compliance. Trevor Hampton had no experience in Code Enforcement, holds no Code Enforcement certifications and is not interested in getting any.

Trevor Hampton told me that his Compliance Officers did not have time to ride around looking for code violations, he stated "100% of the violations come from residents calling in, I only have 4 Officers".

Then Rose Covin makes the statement below???

"Rose Covin, the lead code-enforcement officer for the department of Community Improvement, said the problems are due mostly to foreclosures but the city is working hard to fix them. Covin and three more officers patrol the streets of Sanford every day, looking for violations."

The lake bottom is not suitable for long term anchoring. A proper mooring field is needed if folks are going to have a safe anchoring area that will stay in place throughout the many storms we have. Proper mooring fields depend on the bottom type and many waterfront communities have them. Although they can be revenue producing, they do take study and planning to properly place. I don't know if the local marina or the city has studied this, but there is always the possibility that Fed funds or grants are available to those projects that seek them out. I will start researching some back issue material in BoatUS to see where I recall seeing this type of project undertaken. Rather than an eyesore, a proper mooring field would enhance the tourist trade, as there are a good many folks from the north that boat there way south and spend money here. It would also provide safe swinging room for those derelicts to be, hence the 'charge a fee' approach. In the meantime, I think (but could be wrong), that admiralty law provides title, (salvage rights), to those who go rescue these derelict vessels on the bottom. Some of these boats could be restored and sold. Sounds like an intriguing high school shop class project that could provide training and a new approach to learning.

I guess running most any newspaper in today’s digital age is kind of like facing a long par three hole with the wind in your face, it’s raining and you just triple bogeyed your previous hole.

But in Sanford’s case, I feel that the staff at the Herald has made an outstanding hole-in-one shot over the past year.

"City Manager Sherman Yehl said: “Priorities are whatever the city commission believes are priorities.”

It is amazing to me that this statement was made and supposed to have any validity.

Priorities are SUPPOSED to be what the citizenry believes are priorities. My neighborhood is celebrating because we have had our second consecutive week with no home burglaries. For that to be a cause for celebration is a pathetic statement of the importance placed on the safety of the taxpayer by this City Administration.
